Talk of Miami

Talk of Miami is an abstract photography piece that captures the city’s pulse through architectural symmetry. Each image forms a letter to spell MIAMI, letting the city speak through light, movement, and form, revealing its vibrant rhythm from a fresh perspective.

The story

The City Talks

I’ve flown drones for years, and I’ve always loved seeing the shapes and patterns of my city from above.

In 2022, flying at night over Brickell Key, it hit me. The bridge connecting Brickell and Brickell Key looked like a letter A, clear as day. And with it came the idea: what if I spelled Miami using Miami itself, its own architecture?

For the next three years I searched for the rest, day and night: the M, the I, the second M and the final I. One by one, I found them.

In 2025 it all clicked. I pieced the letters together as Night and Day, and on March 5, 2025, I unveiled Talk of Miami at a show I produced in Wynwood.

The letters

Where Each Letter Lives

Night

The letter M: the Metrorail bridge over the Miami River at night, seen from below with its lights reflected in the water
M

Miami River · Downtown, looking toward Brickell

Under the Metrorail

Standing on the downtown bank of the Miami River, beneath the Metrorail bridge, looking across to Brickell. From below, the bridge forms an M, traced by the colored lights of The Miami Line and mirrored in the river.

The letter I: an overhead night view of the MacArthur Causeway with light trails in both directions and palm trees down the median
I

MacArthur Causeway · Downtown Miami to Miami Beach

The Road to the Beach

Looking straight down on the MacArthur Causeway at night, with the water on either side lost in the dark. Light trails run east and west, and a line of palm trees splits the lanes. It’s one of the most iconic drives in Miami, and it feels good every time: you’re either heading to the beach or coming home from it.

The letter A: an aerial night view of the Brickell Key bridge, with Brickell on the left and Brickell Key on the right
A

Brickell Key Bridge · Brickell and Brickell Key

Where It All Started

The first letter, and the one that started it all. Flying my drone at night above the bridge that joins Brickell, on the left, to Brickell Key, on the right, the shape suddenly appeared: an A, glowing in the city lights below. That moment became Talk of Miami.

The second letter M: an aerial night view of I-95 in Miami, its curving lanes and light trails forming an M
M

I-95 · City of Miami

Sometimes You Just Have to Look Down

I was flying for a skyline shot of the city, with traffic and movement everywhere, when I looked down and everything slowed. The lanes of I-95 had formed an M, clear as day. I’d been searching for this M forever, and there it was, right below me.

The final letter I: the Akoya tower on Miami Beach at night, its crown-shaped top lit in blue
I

Akoya · Collins Avenue, Miami Beach

The Last Piece of the Puzzle

For the final letter, I wanted an I that truly represented Miami. Then, looking across the bay from a distance, I saw it: the Akoya tower, standing tall like an I, its glowing crown on top, staring right back at me. One of the most iconic buildings on Miami Beach, and the perfect way to finish the word.

Day

The letter M in daylight: part of the giant landscaped MIAMI-DADE hedge sign along the Dolphin Expressway, seen from above
M

Dolphin Expressway (SR 836) · Near Miami International Airport

Only From Above

Along the Dolphin Expressway, landscaped hedges spell out MIAMI-DADE in giant letters, a sign you can’t make out from the ground. You only see it from above, flying into Miami International Airport. I’d spotted it from airplane windows on my travels, but never had the shot, until I finally flew my drone there and captured the whole sign. For this piece I chose the M: a part of Miami that only exists from the sky.

The letter I in daylight: the South Pointe jetty seen from above, a line of rocks between turquoise water
I

South Pointe Jetty · South Beach

My Favorite Place to Fly

At the very southern tip of South Beach, a rock jetty divides Government Cut from the beach. South Pointe is one of the most beautiful places in Miami to relax, and I’ve spent a lot of time there. I fly my drone there often, and one day I looked down and there it was: an I, framed by bright blue water. It spoke to me so clearly, and it’s still one of my favorite spots to fly.

The letter A in daylight: an aerial view of the Brickell Key bridge, with Brickell on the left and Brickell Key on the right
A

Brickell Key Bridge · Brickell and Brickell Key

The Same A, in Daylight

The same place where it all started, mirrored in the sun. Brickell sits on the left, Brickell Key on the right, joined by the bridge that forms the clearest A in all of Miami. It’s where the whole piece began, and I couldn’t imagine using any other. It’s still one of my favorite places to come back to and fly.

The second letter M in daylight: looking up from beneath the Metrorail bridge on the Miami River toward the sunlit towers of Brickell
M

Miami River · Downtown, looking toward Brickell

Tying Night and Day Together

I went back to the same spot as the night M, beneath the Metrorail on the Miami River, to tie the two pieces together. In daylight the sun lights up the towers of Brickell and the river throws back its reflections. The Miami River is part of the city’s story, and the Metrorail is how so many of us get around. Both belonged in this piece.

The final letter I in daylight: a paved path lined with rows of palm trees on green grass in Crandon Park, seen from above
I

Crandon Park · Key Biscayne

A Hidden Gem

Crandon Park is where I go to get away: a quieter, local beach, full of wildlife and marine life if you know where to look. One day, flying over a paved path lined with rows of palm trees, I looked down and saw an I. Green grass, palm trees and a path through the middle. Palm trees and Miami go hand in hand, so it was the perfect way to finish the day.

The unveiling

Wynwood, March 5, 2025

March 5 is 305 Day, Miami’s unofficial holiday, and in 2025 I celebrated it by hosting a night at WYN Group Studios in Wynwood. Creators, friends and followers came out for a meetup, and it was the night I revealed Talk of Miami, Night and Day, to the world. I also premiered my drone film Moons Over Miami, a year of Miami hyperlapses compiled into one film. The room filled with applause, and we spent the night celebrating Miami together.
